Last four Heritage Halls buildings coming down

PROVO -- Brigham Young University will begin construction on its new Heritage Halls central building this fall, according to school officials. The four remaining Heritage Halls residence buildings -- Broadbent Hall, Felt Hall, Fox Hall and Harris Hall— will be taken down in August. The new central buildings are expected to be completed by early Summer 2017. Once completed, Heritage Hall residences will total 13, with a total capacity of approximately 2,750 students. The Heritage Halls Central Building will house offices for Heritage Halls administrators, study rooms for residents and multi-purpose space for a variety of activities.” The last four buildings were built in 1953 as part of 24 Heritage Halls residence halls. Hill named to CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy Watch List

PROVO – BYU senior quarterback Taysom Hill was named to the 2015 National Performer of the Year Trophy Watch List by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Monday. The 6-foot-2, 232-pound Hill has been named to the 2015 watch lists for the Walter Camp Award, the Wuerffel Trophy, the Davey O’Brien Award and the Maxwell Award in addition to being named a 2015 Phil Steele Preseason All-Independent selection. Proposed prison relocation site could be revealed on Tuesday

DRAPER -- Lawmakers could learn the proposed location for a new Utah State Prison as early as Tuesday, depending on when Gov. Gary Herbert calls for a special session. Two of the four sites are in Utah County, both have seen loud opposition from local residents. READ MORE HERE 

City releases videos of city candidates

The City of Provo has released a series of videos spotlighting the candidates running for office in the upcoming primary election. Candidates were presented with five questions. Vote by mail ballots must be postmarked by Friday and polling place will open on Tuesday. Only District 3 and the Citywide II seat will have a primary election. READ MORE HERE

Museum to remain open during remodeling

PROVO – A section of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum at Brigham Young University closed temporarily on Tuesday for remodeling. The rest of the museum, including Life on Top: Apex Predators, the Fred and Sue Morris Bird Gallery and the Boyd K. Packer Gallery will remain open during the project. “The area affected by the closure is home to the African Elephant, Protect Your Planet, Into Africa, Insects, Life Submerged and Children’s Room exhibits,” according to a statement from the university. “Remodeling will involve replacement of the ceiling, lighting, mechanical and the floor coverings in this area.” READ MORE HERE

A video is making the rounds that shows the destruction of a hitchhiking Canadian robot that was making its way across the United States. It met its demise in a back alley in Philadelphia, Penn. Brigham Young University has been named – again – as the most “stone-cold sober” school in the country. The designation came from the The Princeton Review, based on a survey of 136,000 students at 380 colleges. According to the report, “Brigham Young University is a Mormon school that’s ‘all about putting religion and education together’ and learning ‘about secular subjects through spiritual eyes.’” The top party school? LOCAL BUSINESS: Well known businessman, daughter die in plane crash during college trip in Wisconsin

LEHI -- Vivint Solar today expressed condolences to the family of Joe Trustey, a member of the company's board of directors. Trustey died July 29, in a plane crash that also claimed the life of his daughter.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Joe Trustey and his lovely daughter," said Greg Butterfield, CEO of Vivint Solar. "Joe was an inspiring leader and friend. He brought great value and warmth to our company and he will be greatly missed."

BYU says tailgating rules unchanged from 2014 season

PROVO — BYU said tailgating plans for the 2015  home football season will be the same as 2014 and won't be changed as earlier reported. In an effort to improve the tailgating experience at BYU, the new plan combines the RV lot with the regular tailgate parking (Lot 20) located directly north of the BYU Broadcasting Building.
“The goal is to create a centralized location that gives Cougar Nation more space to enjoy the pregame tailgating experience with friends and family,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “It’s part of our continued effort to improve the game-day experience at BYU.” READ MORE HERE

WEATHER: What about Girls Camp?

The National Weather Service is calling for a high near 79 degrees today with the low around 50. Girls headed to LDS Girls Camp above Heber will see temperatures about 10 degrees cooler. Mia Shalom campers will see highs around 63 today and lows in the mid 40s, according to forecasts. No rain is expected for the rest of the week. Highs for the rest of the week in Utah County are expected rise to the low 90s by the end of the week, overnight lows in the low 50s.

LOCAL NEWS: Church reconsiders relationship with Boy Scouts

SALT LAKE CITY —  The official statement of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released Monday after a vote on a policy change by the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board to admit openly gay leaders:

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is deeply troubled by today’s vote by the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board. In spite of a request to delay the vote, it was scheduled at a time in July when members of the Church’s governing councils are out of their offices and do not meet. When the leadership of the Church resumes its regular schedule of meetings in August, the century-long association with Scouting will need to be examined. The Church has always welcomed all boys to its Scouting units regardless of sexual orientation. However, the admission of openly gay leaders is inconsistent with the doctrines of the Church and what have traditionally been the values of the Boy Scouts of America.

As a global organization with members in 170 countries, the Church has long been evaluating the limitations that fully one-half of its youth face where Scouting is not available. Those worldwide needs combined with this vote by the BSA National Executive Board will be carefully reviewed by the leaders of the Church in the weeks ahead.” READ MORE HERE

STATE NEWS: Expanded Medicaid proposal ready for special legislative session

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said expanded coverage of Medicaid is ready for lawmakers to consider when they meet in special session next month.

"We're getting closer all the time, and I hope in the next three or four weeks we'll have this thing resolved," the governor said in a press conference on Monday. Although details of the governor’s plan have not yet been revealed, it is expected that it will use federal funding as he proposed late last year leading up to the 2015 Legislative Session. The sticking point among local lawmakers has in the past been the uncertainty of funding for expanded Medicaid once states – including Utah – are weaned of federal funds in years to come. LOCAL NEWS: Two cool events you won’t want to miss

PROVO – A huge dance party will take place Friday night between University Avenue and 100 West in downtown Provo. Five bands headlined by Ricky Miami and featuring special performances by Mimi Knowles, Ashley Hess, Na-G and RAP GAME will entertain the hundreds of people expected to fill the streets around Zeek’s Pieshake Parlour, which is sponsoring the event. Admission is free.

The next morning, volunteers will gather along the lower Provo River for a massive cleanup project. The effort will begin at 8 a.m. at Lakeshore Bridge Trailhead – Corner of Lakeshore Drive and Boat Harbor. A light lunch will be provided to volunteers, many of whom will bring canoes, kayaks and paddleboards to remove trash from final stretch of the river before it enters Utah Lake. READ MORE HERE
